The Statistical Abstract files are distributed by the "US Census Department":http://www.census.gov/population/www/popdata.html as Microsoft Excel files. These files have data mixed with notes and references, multiple tables per sheet, and, worst of all, the table headers are not easily matched to their rows and columns.

A few files had extraneous characters in the title. These were corrected to be consistent. A few files have a sheet of crufty gibberish in the first slot. The sheet order was shuffled but no data were changed.

The tables that were changed (this is table 716):

1144 1227 1231
</pre>

This dataset consists of a table of 13 rows and 16 columns.

1967 = 100. Computed weekly for 1980; daily thereafter. Represents unweighted geometric average of price quotations of 23 commodities; much more sensitive to changes in market conditions than is a monthly producer price index. For description and methodology, see below table

bq.. The Statistical Abstract of the United States, published since 1878, is the authoritative and comprehensive summary of statistics on the social, political, and economic organization of the United States.

Use the Abstract as a convenient volume for statistical reference, and as a guide to sources of more information both in print and on the Web.

Sources of data include the Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bureau of Economic Analysis, and many other Federal agencies and private organizations.

p. The Infochimps repository contains the entirety of the 2008 Statistic Abstract, one dataset for each of its 1356 tables. Stock ownership rates, statistics on livestock, foreclosure frequencies -- you name it, it's in the Statistical Abstract.

# Preliminary.
# Derived by multiplying the price per Btu of each fossil fuel by the total Btu content of the
production of each fossil fuel and dividing this accumulated value of total fossil fuel
production by the accumulated Btu content of total fossil fuel production.
# Domestic first purchase prices.
# Wellhead prices.
# Free-on board (f.o.b.) rail/barge prices, which are the free-on-board prices of coal at the point of first sale,
excluding freight or shipping and insurance costs. Includes bituminous coal, subbituminous coal, and

h3. Footnotes
# Data are for uranium concentrate, a yellow or brown powder obtained by the milling of uranium ore,
processing of in situ leach mining solutions, or as a byproduct of phosphoric acid production.
# Import quantities through 1970 are reported for fiscal years. Prior to 1968, the Atomic Energy
Commission was the sole purchaser of all imported U3O8. Trade data prior to 1982 were for transactions
conducted by uranium suppliers only. For 1982 forward, transactions by uranium buyers (consumers) have
been included. Buyer imports and exports prior to 1982 are believed to be small.
# Does not include any fuel rods removed from reactors and
later reloaded into the reactor.
# Uranium content. Source: Nuclear Assurance Corporation, Atlanta, GA.
# Reprocessed fuel not included as inventory.

The tables that were changed (this is table 911):

</pre>

This dataset consists of a table of 33 rows and 47 columns.

Beginning 2003, the category "other" has been replaced by "transportation," and the categories "commercial" and "industrial" have been redefined. Data represent revenue from electricity retail sales divided by the amount of retail electricity sold (in kilowatthours). Prices include State and local taxes, energy or demand charges, customer service charges, environmental surcharges, franchise fees, fuel adjustments, and other miscellaneous charges applied to end-use customers during normal billing operations. Prices do not include deferred charges, credits, or other adjustments, such as fuel or revenue from purchased power, from previous reporting periods. Through 1979, data are for Classes A and B privately owned electric utilities only. For 1980-1982, data are for selected Class A utilities whose electric operating revenues were $100 million or more during the previous year. For 1983, data are for a selected sample of electric utilities. Beginning in 1984, data are for a census of electric utilities. Beginning in 1996, data also include energy service providers selling to retail customers

It is important to weigh in facts like scope and quality, but more recently also information about reader availability and library cost. The Lund University Libraries have made an attempt to merge all there items into one tool, giving the researcher the power to make informed choices.

The service currently covers about 18,000 journals. It is discussed to add additional journals later this year.

MeasuringWorth

The mission of this site is to make available to the public the highest quality and most reliable historical data on important economic aggregates, with particular emphasis on nominal measures.

The data have been created using the highest standards of the fields of economics and history and are rigorously refereed by the most distinguished researchers in the fields. Beginning with the United States and United Kingdom and continuing with Japan and China, we will continue to add series from other countries under the same high standard.

The emphasis on nominal measures distinguishes this site. This is because to comprehend a past transaction or asset, one must begin with the contemporary value of the item. To make this valuation meaningful, it must be measured against the value of the appropriate economic indicator in that year. To understand the valuation from another year's perspective, one must carry that measure forward against the changing value of the indicator.

Over the last five years the two of us have carried out research on alternative ways to compare the relative worth of things. During that time we developed several "calculators" on the web site EH.Net. In the summer of 2006 we started this site dedicated exclusively to exploring the question of how to measure worth. We continue to add to it and hope that our essay Measures of Worth and the User Guide are of help.

Our own money has financed all the calculators and data sets on this site. If you would like to support our work, please make a contribution so we can continue this valuable endeavor. If you are interested in becoming our sponsor, please contact one of us.

Dollar-Pound Exchange Rate From 1791

An exchange rate is the price of one currency in terms of another currency. The exchange rate presented here is the price of the British pound in U.S. dollars, that is, the number of U.S. dollars per British pound. This is the traditional way in which the relative price of the two currencies is compared.

The exchange rate between the United States dollar and British pound is one of the longest available and most-important exchange rates in history. The exchange-rate series presented here is distinguished by the high-quality and reliability of the underlying data. For information on this exchange-rate series, please consult the Information on Dollar-Pound Exchange Rate.

You may retrieve the exchange rate (number of dollars per pound) for any year or group of years beginning in 1791.

Provides Real gasoline pump prices on an annual basis back to 1919 and monthly prices for gasoline, heating oil, diesel fuel, and imported refiners acquistion cost of crude oil from January 1980 through the end of the forecast. Monthly Real Petroleum Prices are computed by dividing the nominal price in a given month by the ratio of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in that month to the CPI in the current STEO month, the "base" period. Example: The current base period for the August 2009 data is August 2009. The base period for the annual data is the previous year, in this case is 2008. So the real annual prices are in 2008 dollars. The base period for the annual data will be updated in January 2010.
