Wikipedia is a multilingual, Web-based, free content encyclopedia
project. The name Wikipedia is a portmanteau (combination) of the
words wiki (a type of collaborative website) and

into one of the largest reference Web sites. There are more than
75,000 active contributors working on some 9,000,000 articles in
more than 250 languages. As of today, there are 2,293,986 articles

From "Wikipedia":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Infobox

bq. An infobox on Wikipedia is a consistently formatted table which is present in articles with a common subject to provide summary information consistently between articles or improve navigation to closely related articles in that subject. (An infobox is a generalization of a taxobox (from taxonomy) which summarizes information for an organism or group of organisms.)

p. Wikipedia Infoboxes are the small tables that appear on the right hand side of many Wikipedia articles. They succinctly summarize the features of the article's subject, whether it be "dogs":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labrador_Retriever, "molecules":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glucose, or "fighter jets":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-16_Fighting_Falcon.

The Infochimps repository contains 3382 datasets, each aggregating a particular kind of Infobox.

From <http://www.finerollshenry3.org.uk/cocoon/frh3/content/about/about.html>:

> The Henry III Fine Rolls Project is a three year enterprise commencing in April 2005, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. It aims to publish the Fine Rolls of Henry III from 1216 down to 1248. It is hoped that a second three year project will complete publication down to the end of the reign in 1272.
>
> There is a fine roll for each of Henry III's fifty-six regnal years held in the National Archives at Kew in the record series C 60. Containing offers of money to the king for a multiplicity of concessions and favours, as well as a great deal of other material, they are of the first importance for the study of political, governmental, legal, social, and economic history.

    * Original images of the rolls: copyright National Archives and "may be used only for purposes of research, private study or education" (for other uses you have to write to them and see).
    * Latin text itself: obviously this should be public domain but the latin text is not made available (though one might want to be cautious given Sawkins vs. Hyperion).

"A vision of Britain between 1801 and 2001. Including maps, statistical trends and historical descriptions." More focused on re-organising the data for access by locality than on enabling downloading of the raw data but have clearly put significant time and energy into data extraction. Specifically they have:

  * An [administrative gazetteer](http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/units/index.jsp) which includes:
            * Youngs' *Local Administrative Units of England* (1979 and 1991)
    * Melville Richards' *Welsh Administrative and Territorial Units* (1969)
    * The Scottish Archives Network's Gazetteer, covering counties, parishes and burghs
    * The National Register of Archives' *Manorial Documents Register*
  * [Census reports from 1801-1961](http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/census/index.jsp) consisting of:
    * Listings of all reports published from 1801 to 1961,
        and all tables in those reports.
        Unless you ask, we list only reports and tables for which
        we hold data or text.
    * The contents of selected tables, with headings and notes.
    * Introductory text — so far,
        Abstracts 1801-41, Preliminary Reports 1851-1961,
        and the 1911 General Report.

  * License: someone, somewhere holds copyright and there's no explicit license.
  * Access: all data is interwoven with text, graphics etc. Basically you'd need to do some really serious roboting/parsing to get any data out of this website, but most of the data can be obtained via the UK Data Archive at the University of Essex.
    * bulk: no
    * web-api: yes (OGC web map server access)
    * website: yes (roboting: hard)

From the website:

> What is MIDAS?

> MIDAS sets out an agreed list of the items or 'units' of information that should be included in an inventory or other systematic record of the historic environment. These units of information are grouped together under broad headings or 'information schemes'. These cover areas such as Monument Character, Events, People and Organisation etc. It is a 'content' standard or 'metadata' standard for historic environment information. Standards for indexing under each 'unit of information' to assist retrieval of information are contained in the INSCRIPTION standard. See the FISH website for further details of INSCRIPTION.

> Why is MIDAS important?

> A vast body of knowledge and understanding of the historic environment is held in a wide variety of 'inventories', maintained by national bodies of record, local authorities, museums, amenity groups, individual and university based researchers. To make the best use of this store of information, especially where these resources are available on the internet, it is important there is a shared understanding of what information should be recorded. MIDAS sets out that shared understanding, based on the experience of many of the key organisations involved in the collection and dissemination of information about the historic environment.

> How has MIDAS developed?

> MIDAS developed during 1996-1998 from the work of a committee set up to co-ordinate standards across English national and local inventories. That work is now taken forward under the auspices of FISH, with a view to extending the MIDAS standard to be relevant to other regions in the U.K. and Ireland.

> A second edition of MIDAS is now planned. You can find out more about current developments on the MIDAS updates page.

> How should MIDAS be used?

> MIDAS can be used to plan the content of a new inventory, for example to support a new recording project, or to audit the existing content of an inventory, and identify any useful additional information. MIDAS is designed to be an open standard, that can be applied in a variety of ways to different sorts of inventory records.

> Who is MIDAS for?

> MIDAS is intended to be used by a wide variety of heritage projects including:
* Local societies and amenity groups.
* University based research projects or individual studies.
* Professional heritage managers.
* National thematic study groups.

> What is in MIDAS?

> MIDAS contains both the standard, and a manual to assist in the application of the standard to a variety of situations, plus worked examples of how the standard can be applied.

MeasuringWorth

The mission of this site is to make available to the public the highest quality and most reliable historical data on important economic aggregates, with particular emphasis on nominal measures.

The data have been created using the highest standards of the fields of economics and history and are rigorously refereed by the most distinguished researchers in the fields. Beginning with the United States and United Kingdom and continuing with Japan and China, we will continue to add series from other countries under the same high standard.

The emphasis on nominal measures distinguishes this site. This is because to comprehend a past transaction or asset, one must begin with the contemporary value of the item. To make this valuation meaningful, it must be measured against the value of the appropriate economic indicator in that year. To understand the valuation from another year's perspective, one must carry that measure forward against the changing value of the indicator.

Over the last five years the two of us have carried out research on alternative ways to compare the relative worth of things. During that time we developed several "calculators" on the web site EH.Net. In the summer of 2006 we started this site dedicated exclusively to exploring the question of how to measure worth. We continue to add to it and hope that our essay Measures of Worth and the User Guide are of help.

Our own money has financed all the calculators and data sets on this site. If you would like to support our work, please make a contribution so we can continue this valuable endeavor. If you are interested in becoming our sponsor, please contact one of us.

"What Was the Interest Rate Then?" presents twelve interest rate series for the United Kingdom and the United States. The rates presented here are not those associated with common experiences such as obtaining a mortgage or receiving interest on a bank account, but rather they are the rates that set the tone for determining these ordinary rates.

There are two short-term and one long-term series presented for each country and they are reported from both a contemporary and consistent standpoint. The series are:

    * United Kingdom
            Short-Term Interest Rates
                Ordinary Funds (1790-2007)
                Surplus Funds (1855-2007)
            Long-Term Interest Rate (1729-2007)
    * United States
            Short-Term Interest Rates
                Ordinary Funds (1831-2007)
                Surplus Funds (1857-2007)
            Long-Term Interest Rate (1798-2007)

Prior to using the data presented in any of these series, we strongly recommend that you read the "Guide to What Was the Interest Rate Then?" This guide, only three pages in length, is oriented to the general reader but is also a useful summary of the interest-rate material for the scholar. The serious scholar or specialist should also read "What Was the Interest Rate Then? A Data Study." This 109-page monograph describes fully the generation and characteristics of the series in What Was the Interest Rate Then?, enables the scholar to interpret the series, and provides information permitting the scholar to alter the series as required for his or her own purposes.

(from "Wikipedia":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Weather_Service) The National Weather Service (NWS), once known as the Weather Bureau, is one of the six scientific agencies that make up the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States government. It is headquartered in Silver Spring, Maryland.
The NWS is tasked with providing weather, hydrologic, and climate forecasts and warnings for the United States, its territories, adjacent waters and ocean areas, for the protection of life and property and the enhancement of the national economy. This is done through a collection of national and regional centers, and 122 local weather forecast offices (WFOs).
This geospatial rendering of weather radar sites gives access to an historical archive of Terminal Doppler Weather Radar data and is used primarily for research purposes. The archived data includes base data and derived products of the National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Surveillance Radar 88 Doppler (WSR-88D) next generation (NEXRAD) weather radar. Weather radar detects the three meteorological base data quantities: reflectivity, mean radial velocity, and spectrum width. From these quantities, computer processing generates numerous meteorological analysis products for forecasts, archiving and dissemination. There are 159 operational NEXRAD radar systems deployed throughout the United States and at selected overseas locations. At the Radar Operations Center (ROC) in Norman OK, personnel from the NWS, Air Force, Navy, and FAA use this distributed weather radar system to collect the data needed to warn of impending severe weather and possible flash floods; support air traffic safety and assist in the management of air traffic flow control; facilitate resource protection at military bases; and optimize the management of water, agriculture, forest, and snow removal. This data set is jointly owned by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Federal Aviation Administration, and Department of Defense.

The NWS is tasked with providing weather, hydrologic, and climate forecasts and warnings for the United States, its territories, adjacent waters and ocean areas, for the protection of life and property and the enhancement of the national economy. This is done through a collection of national and regional centers, and 122 local weather forecast offices (WFOs). Since the NWS is a government agency, most of its products are in the public domain and available free of charge.}

The National Weather Service (NWS) Storm Prediction Center (SPC) routinely collects reports of severe weather and compiles them with public access from the database called SeverePlot (Hart and Janish 1999) with a Graphic Information System (GIS). The composite SVRGIS information is made available to the public primarily in .zip files of approximately 50MB size. The files located at the access point have organized severe weather data by County Warning Area (CWA). A CWA is a grouping of counties for which severe weather information is distributed. Although available to all, the data provided may be of particular value to weather professionals and students of meteorological sciences. An instructional manual is provided on how to build and develop a basic severe weather report GIS database in ArcGis and is located at the technical documentation site contained in this metadata catalog.
